Frequently Asked Questions

Crew Leader Training

Have you spent considerable time in the backcountry? Maybe you’ve worked as a guide or on a trail crew before? Would you like to volunteer to lead a trail maintenance project? Join our crew leaders for a two-day training at the beginning of our season (end of May, beginning of June) at Spotted Bear to learn skills in map reading, orienteering, Leave No Trace, and crosscut saw certification. After assessing your abilities, you may have the opportunity to lead volunteer groups on your own or co-lead with one of our full-time leaders. Contact us for more details!

Volunteer Camp Cooks Needed

Do you have backcountry recipes that would put Martha Stewart to shame? How about cooking for a group of hungry volunteers? We are looking for folks who would like to spend a week or part of a week cooking for volunteers from various organizations. Project locations vary throughout the Bob Marshall Complex and occur throughout the summer. We provide the food and cooking gear. Let us know if you are interested and we'll send you more details!

Volunteer Packers Needed

The Bob Marshall Wilderness Foundation is looking for experienced packers with stock (horses, mules or llamas) to pack food, tools, and gear for volunteer projects. Some groups may only need a re-supply in the middle of the project while other groups may require packing gear in and out of their project locations. Please note that all volunteer packers will be required to take or provide proof that they have taken a short US Forest Service Defensive Horse Safety or Stock Training class. We can provide dates for upcoming classes or check with your local Backcountry Horsemen chapter for training dates in your area. Please contact us to receive a list of potential packing opportunities and more details.
