American Hiking Society #1: Bear Lake*

Type of Project: backpacking, trailwork
Rating: Moderate
Trip Dates: 06/26/2010 to 07/04/2010
Location: Rocky Mountain Front
Work: The wildfires of 2007 were wide-spread on the Rocky Mountain Front, so the trails need your help! Volunteers will work on the trail to Bear Lake (approx 6.5 miles) to cut out any logs that may be on the trail, to maintain and install drainage features (digging), remove hazard trees, cut out pesky brush and work on some boggy spots. These drainage features will aid in erosion control in burned areas to help maintain healthy watersheds and fisheries. Our work this season will have lasting effects to protect the resource into the future. Be sure to bring a great attitude, work ethic and smile to share!
We are lucky enough to have mules to pack-in tools, food and group gear, so that leaves you with only your personal gear for the hike in! The hike in starts on trail #202 from Mortimor Gulch Trailhead and follows the Gibson Reservoir east for approx 5.5 miles along mostly flat ground. About a ½ mile past the Reservoir you will cross over the Wilderness Boundary and start to head southwest near the South Fork of the Sun River. The last mile will test your endurance, but you'll arrive to camp hungry for a wonderful meal! The hike along the reservior affords vistas of steep limestone "reefs", craggy peaks and wildflowers in bloom, all to the tune of rustling aspen leaves and traveling songbirds.

Once you submit your registration to BMWF, you will receive more detailed project information including a suggested packing list and driving directions.

This is a backcountry camping trip with a primitive campsite. BMWF will coordinate pack support to transport food, group gear and tools into the backcountry, but volunteers should be prepared to hike in all personal gear. You will be asked to provide your own gear and assist in camp chores. Sturdy boots, long pants and work gloves are required. All tools, safety gear and food will be provided.

This trip is coordinated through American Hiking Society and requires an additional fee.
