| Trip Dates: |
07/31/2010 to 08/07/2010 |
| Location: |
Upper Middle Fork Flathead River, Spotted Bear Ranger District, Bob Marshall Wilderness |
| Work: |
The Red Plume #340 is a former Forest Service Lookout trail that leads to a small "house" that Rangers used to spot fires. While the lookout structure is no longer used, the trail is worth restoring due to the incredible views at its terminus. With its central location, Red Plume Mountain offers some of the most fantastic vistas into the Bob Marshall Wilderness and even into Glacier National Park. Hundreds of trees lay over the trail and alder is fighting to take over the trail so the theme of this project is sawing and clearing! Base camp is set right on the Middle Fork of Flathead River with ample water sources and beautiful river scenery. The crew will hike between 2-4 miles each day to work building on the previous day’s work.
The 12 mile hike to camp is pretty easy with regards to elevation and we have the luxury of having all tools, food and group gear packed in on mules! That leaves personal gear on your back for the hike down a handful of switchbacks, but overall we actually LOSE 200 feet of elevation on the way to camp. Of course, that means the hike out is a bit more uphill. With views of Crescent Cliff and Slippery Bill Mountain to the east, lush fir and spruce forests and a handful of creek crossings, the hike to camp is mostly shaded and very pleasant. Base camp is set right on Lodgepole Creek with ample water sources and calming river scenery with cottonwoods and willow.
Once you submit your registration to BMWF, you will receive more detailed project information including a suggested packing list and driving directions.
This is a backcountry camping trip with a primitive campsite. BMWF will coordinate pack support to transport food, group gear and tools into the backcountry, but volunteers should be prepared to hike in all personal gear. You will be asked to provide your own gear and assist in camp chores. Sturdy boots, long pants and work gloves are required. All tools, safety gear and food will be provided.
This project is coordinated through American Hiking Society and requires an additional fee. |
