BMWF #14: Granite Creek

Type of Project: backpacking, trailwork, campsite rehab, GPS weeds inventory
Rating: Moderate
Trip Dates: 09/09/2010 to 09/13/2010
Location: Upper Middle Fork Flathead River, Spotted Bear Ranger District
Work: This is a perfect project for those volunteers that want to get into the backcountry, but only have a long weekend to spend. Just 6 miles into the wilderness, but it feels like you’re far from town! Perched on a rock slab overlooking the designated Wild & Scenic Middle Fork of the Flathead River, Granite Cabin is a Forest Service facility used by crews during the field season and will serve as our base of operations for the week. We’ll be working on some trails near the cabin where they are sloughing off of the trail and where the brush is threatening to take over. Volunteers will also be instructed in plant identification and will help GPS inventory noxious weeds near the confluence of Granite Creek and the Middle Fork for future work. Enjoy spectacular sunsets in the red rock gorge of the Middle Fork and wet a line fishing for native westslope cutthroat trout in the evening. Once you submit your registration to BMWF, you will receive more detailed project information including a suggested packing list and driving directions.

This is a backcountry camping trip with primitive campsite, but a few cabin luxuries. Volunteers will be asked to provide their own personal gear. Sturdy boots, long pants and work gloves are required. All tools, safety gear and food will be provided.
Total Miles: 6
