Boone and Crockett Club/Montana Wilderness Assocation #2: Seedling Creek

Type of Project: education, backpacking, trailwork
Rating: Moderate
Trip Dates: 08/21/2010 to 08/29/2010
Location: Rocky Mountain Front, Bob Marshall Wilderness
Work: This project seeks to integrate wilderness stewardship, conservation education and community involvement by highlighting conservation issues along the Rocky Mountain Front and a backcountry work project. The Bob Marshall Wilderness Foundation has partnered up with The Boone and Crockett Club and the Montana Wilderness Association to host two of our most exciting projects yet! Volunteers will spend 2 nights tent camping and a full day of educational programming at the Boone and Crockett Club’s Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Ranch. This 6,000 acre ranch and world class education and research facility lies in the foothills of the east slope of the Rocky Mountains near Dupuyer, MT adjacent to Forest Service Land and the Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex. Volunteers will then head into the field for a 5 day backcountry trip to Seedling Creek from the North Fork of Dupuyer Creek Trailhead, just 10 miles from the Ranch. We will focus on trailwork to reduce erosion and enhance the quality of the watershed by installing retaining walls along Seedling Creek. The trail is sloughing off of the hillside in places and will require digging and installation of waterbars and drain dips to control water runoff and minimize erosion. The crew will work under the leadership of a Bob Marshall Wilderness Foundation crew leader who will provide the technical training, safety briefings and local knowledge of trail conditions, use and maintenance.
The crew will return to the Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Ranch and education center for a closing program Saturday night before traveling home Sunday. Once you submit your registration to BMWF, you will receive more detailed project information including a suggested packing list and driving directions.

This is a car-camping AND backcountry camping trip with primitive campsites. BMWF will coordinate pack support to bring in tools, food, group gear and maybe some personal gear. You will be asked to provide your own gear and assist in camp chores. Sturdy boots, long pants and work gloves are required. All tools, safety gear and food will be provided.
