Weeds #2: Pretty Prairie

Type of Project: backpacking, hand pulling & spraying weeds
Rating: Moderate
Trip Dates: 06/21/2010 to 06/25/2010
Location: Rocky Mountain Front
Work: Help us kick off the first ever “Weeds Week” sponsored by the Rocky Mountain Ranger District. This project will be focused on eradicating weeds around the scenic Pretty Prairie Guard Station on the South Fork of the Sun River. This area burned in the Ahorn fire of 2007, so now's the time to stop weeds in their tracks! We’ll be working around the cabin and the surrounding prairie lands to eliminate Spotted Knapweed that threatens to overtake native grasses which provide valuable graze for wildlife. The BMWF crew leader will train each volunteer on plant identification and we’ll employ a variety of methods to help us meet our goals. Volunteers can choose to hand pull weeds or work under the direct supervision of a certified herbicide applicator to spray these invaders. Won’t you help us maintain healthy ecosystems and keep weeds out of backcountry? During down time, the nearby South Fork of the Sun River affords wonderful swimming and fishing opportunities. Once you submit your registration to BMWF, you will receive more detailed project information including a suggested packing list and driving directions.

This is a backcountry camping trip with primitive campsites and/or based around a FS cabin. BMWF will coordinate pack support to bring in tools, food, group gear and maybe some personal gear. You will be asked to provide your own gear and assist in camp chores. Sturdy boots, long pants and work gloves are required. All tools, safety gear and food will be provided
