Weeds #7 - South Fork Flathead Weeds Float

Type of Project: backpacking, float based hand pulling & spraying weeds
Rating: Moderate
Trip Dates: 08/04/2010 to 08/10/2010
Location: South Fork Flathead River, Spotted Bear Ranger District
Work: Hold onto your hats, this might just be the HOTTEST trip of the season! This is our first ever river based weeds trip on the South Fork of the Flathead River. Not for the faint of heart, this float requires a 2 day hike to the put-in! We’ll start at the Meadow Creek TH, with an overnight at Black Bear Cabin before continuing on to the confluence of the South Fork and the White River. We’ll launch our fleet of rafts and inflatable kayaks to conquer weedy invaders on this class II-III designated Wild & Scenic River. A certified herbicide applicator will train each volunteer on plant identification and herbicide application to help us meet our goals. We’ll set up a low impact camp each night at the river’s edge and tent under the stars.
Space is limited in the boats so packing light is key! We will float ~25 river miles to the Mid Creek Takeout just upstream of the Meadow Creek Gorge and stretch our legs hiking the final 4 miles back to our vehicles at the trailhead.
We ask that volunteers are comfortable on the water and don't mind getting wet! You can look forward to unmatched scenery, hard work and a trip you'll never forget. Help us fight weeds on one of the most pristine rivers in the lower 48 states and see The Bob by a different means.
This is a backcountry camping trip with primitive campsites. BMWF will coordinate pack support to bring in tools, food, group gear and maybe some personal gear. You will be asked to provide your own gear and assist in camp chores. Sturdy boots, long pants and work gloves are required while spraying weeds, but don't forget your river sandals and your camera. All tools, safety gear and food will be provided. Once you register, you will be provided additional information to plan for your trip. Space is very limited so sign up today!
Total Miles: 24 miles hiking (~25 miles floating)
Elevation Gain: +800'
RSVP: FULL
